The Story Behind Eagle Dancer

The inspiration for Eagle Dancer came from a carved figure displayed in my dentist’s office in Arizona. The office has been in his family for generations, and his grandfather, who was also a dentist, received Native American artwork and carvings from local tribal members in exchange for dental care.

Today, walking through the office feels almost like stepping into a small Southwestern art museum. One of those figures captured my attention and stayed with me.

I did not want simply to reproduce the carving. Instead, I imagined the figure brought to life—moving through a Southwestern landscape, surrounded by weathered stone, warm light, and atmosphere.

In the finished painting, the dancer emerges against the subdued rock landscape while the sweeping wings command the composition. Light catches the feathers, regalia, and strands of hair, while the surrounding stone remains quiet and atmospheric so that the dancer remains the unmistakable focus.

From My Easel

My goal with Eagle Dancer was not simply to describe every feather, fold, and stone. I wanted the painting to feel alive with movement and presence. I kept portions of the surrounding rock and atmosphere painterly and subdued, using layered color, scumbling, visible brushwork, and lost-and-found edges so the figure and sweeping wings could carry the focus.

The Southwest has a way of holding both strength and stillness. I hope Eagle Dancer carries a little of that presence beyond the canvas. — Tonja Hicks, Fine Artist
