The Story Behind the Painting

With its jaunty topknot and alert expression, this Gambel’s quail brings a little Southwestern personality to the canvas. Curious Quail celebrates the charm, character, and watchful nature of one of Arizona’s most familiar desert birds.

I created Curious Quail for a fundraiser benefiting the Kingman Center for the Arts in Kingman, Arizona.

From My Easel

I wanted this little quail to feel lively and present rather than overly detailed. The soft Southwestern background lets the bird’s expression, markings, and wonderful topknot take center stage.

Thank you for visiting my studio. I hope this painting brought you a moment of joy and inspiration. — Tonja Hicks, Fine Artist
